This flight of 16 successive locks is one of the most impressive on the UK’s waterways and forms part of the Devizes flight of 29 locks. Combining a diverse mosaic of habitats, it offers the perfect place to relax and enjoy the passage of boats surrounded by the tranquility of nature. The locks were engineer John Rennie's solution to climbing the very steep hill in Devizes, these locks were the last part of the 87 mile route of the Kennet & Avon Canal to be completed. Whether you're out and about for the day or just taking a quick stroll by the canal, the cafe at the top of Caen Hill Lock Flight is a welcome stop-off for all the family, dogs included. After lunch enjoy a nature ramble around the historic locks. Water voles, badgers, bats and rare water plants have made their home by this attractive stretch of the Kennet & Avon Canal, and sharp-eyed visitors may be able to spot the difference between 14 species of dragonfly. Information on other canal side attractions, local heritage, wildlife and the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust is available from the cafe and gift shop, if you can tear yourself away from the homemade cakes! ##What about schools and groups? A visit to the Caen Hill Trail helps children to understand the workings of the magnificent flight of 16 locks on the Kennet & Avon Canal. There are also opportunities for pond dipping at one of the side ponds. For a longer visit, the Caen Hill Trail can easily be combined with a visit to the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust Museum at Devizes Wharf and a walk along the Devizes Wharf Trail.
