The high sheriff's canal challenge

Ian Dudson, the High Sheriff of Staffordshire is taking part in a Canal Challenge, which involves walking all 150 miles of the canals in Staffordshire. Ian is welcoming members of the public to join him for each walk.

The challenge will raise funds for the Staffordshire Community Foundation.

Walk 13 (10 miles)

Start 10.00am at Fazeley Junction

  • From Peel's Wharf there are lightly wooded open fields towards Hopwas Hill as the canal follows the course of the River Tame
  • From Hopwas there is a very attractive wooded stretch that covers the side of the hill
  • After the wood you can see Tamworth to the east
  • At Whittington bridge (77) the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal meets the Coventry Canal

Lunch The Swan Inn, Whittington, Friendly canalside pub serving real ale

  • At Huddlesford (between bridges 82 and 83), the Canal branches to the south-west
  • You will then walk through flat open countryside towards Fradley Junction where the Coventry Canal meets the Trent & Mersey canal and is overlooked by the Swan, a famous canal landmark
